Building the Splatter Identity

Building the Splatter Identity

Since it's birth in 1996, Splatter's corporate branding has undergone many transformations.

As the Splatter brand has grown and developed, so too the logo representing the company has changed to reflect that development.

Originally on hand-painted ceramics made by Angela Maher (the earliest examples dating as far back as 1993), the Splatter logo was drawn by hand, usually accompanied by the date the piece was made and occasionally detailing the name of the piece or collection, and a series of hand-drawn 'splashes'.

In about 1998 the logo was redesigned as a hand-etched font developed by Angela (shown at right), to reflect some of the design work on the collectable ceramic hand-made homewares carried by the brand.

The Seven Deadly Sins Range, and the ever popular Splatter baby bowls, plates and cups all carried this font as part of their intrinsic designs, and the logo reflected those designs. The lettering was all done by hand, using a specially made fine glaze nib.

In 2001, this logo was created as a hand-carved stamp for all ceramic works as the quantity of pieces being made by Angela demanded a speedier way of marking the brand on each artwork. Essentially though, the logo was still based on the hand-drawn font developed by Angela.

With the company's incorporation in 2007 and the launch of our new online gallery, it was decided by the Directors that the corporate branding and logo for the business needed to change and should reflect the changed structure and success of the Company, whilst still reflecting the organic nature of our past branding.

The new design needed to capture the modern spirit of the business, and capture the 'illustrative', cartoon-based and onomatapaeic nature of the business name. The distinctive Splatter icon and logo (shown in the website banner) was designed to make the business recognisable in a highly competitive export environment.

Internationally recognised, trademarked and trusted, the Splatter logo and icon continue to capture the essence of the Splatter brand; quality, modernity, whimsy and originality.
